Exclusions
Exclusions, exclusions, exclusions was the topic that got my attention in this week's reading. Over the years in my history classes we would always discuss exclusions but only to a certain extent and in the end I never got a full understanding of what took place because of the lack of details that was shared. When I was reading and came across Chinese exclusions and laws they made targeting them really interested me because I picked up an abundant amount of information. I did not know what the Chinese had to go through and after reading this week its extremely sad how they had exclusions acts for them because they were not welcomed when they emigrated. We have come along way since those days and change has definitely occurred with the course of time. So many immigrants had it really hard when they came to the United States and yet they continued to come, why did they still come if they were treated so harshly?

I've always wondered about this and could really only come to the conclusion that it was a necessity to come to the U.S. I know for a fact that when my family immigrated here the treatment of Hispanics wasn't really the best. But the need to migrate was so strong that they really overlooked everything else. I'm not sure if this is the absolute reason but I think it's one of the reasons they continued to enter.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading your blog, I really questioned that as well. I believe immigrants do take the risk and choose to immigrate to America because of the conditions at home. It could be economic, political, or persecution taking place. As for family, the communist took over Vietnam at the time and my parents decided to flee to America because they viewed it as a land of opportunity and a place where they could raise their children. It is a shame that I do not know the details yet. However, with the ancestry project coming up I hope to find out more.
ReplyDeleteI have the same thoughts as you regarding the treatment of Chinese immigrants. It’s so sad that they received worse treatments than other immigrant groups just because they were Asians. It’s so sad to read about how discrimination played a huge part in this country! I think one of the many reasons why they continued to come to the U.S. was probably because the conditions back home were so bad. Even though they faced a tough situation in America, there were still more opportunities for them to build a successful future for themselves and their children than back home. For instance, even though their salary in the U.S. was very low, it was still more than the amount they received back in China.
ReplyDeleteThat is a really good question that you brought up. I think that one of the reasons that people want to come to the United States, is because they come with the idea that they will have the "American Dream" The dream of coming to America and getting an education, a good job, and living a good lifestyle. However, it is not that easy to come to America and make that happen. It takes a lot of hard work. But once you overcome all the difficulties the success and end result will be the best feeling
